11. Ask the locals about the past names of the village and its fascinating history

In the last century, Mikros and Megalos Kazaviti villages were known as Papaz-Mahala and Tsingoura. If you feel chatty, ask a local about the rich Kazaviti history.

In short, these villages have existed since ancient times. Evidence of settlements dating back to the 4th century BC, including castles and pottery, has been found. The area was mainly focused on agriculture and is known for its vineyards and fantastic wine.

After all, the name “Kazaviti” is believed to come from the Latin words “casa” (house) and “Vitis” (vineyard), which shows its connection to vineyards.

20. Ask the nun in the Panteleimon monastery about its history

Ask the host to tell you the fascinating story of the monastery church. To get you an idea, picture this: in 1843, a group of workers set out to construct the temple. But something strange kept happening – their hard work would vanish every night! Tools and all.

They soon realized it was a miracle. Footprints led them to a cave where their tools were mysteriously placed. It became clear that a higher power wanted the monastery right there, next to the cave.

They named it after St. Panteleimon, who was believed to have lived in that very cave. And guess what? A sacred spring has been flowing from that cave since ancient times!

People have flocked here for centuries, seeking healing and praying to St. Panteleimon. In 1987, this remarkable place was officially recognized as a monastery. Every year, on July 27th, a grand festival is held in honor of Saint Panteleimon. It’s a celebration you want to attend!

About Thasos Holidays

I am Dimi and this is a travel blog about Thassos Greece, my homeland. Although I grew up on this island for almost two decades, I decided to move and study abroad for six years. After Thassos, I lived in five different countries. During that time, I traveled to four continents and saw more places than I could count.

However, it was during the pandemic and my return to Thassos that I realized how lucky I am to call this island my home. And this blog is an effort to show you the beauty of Thassos. I hope you enjoy it :))
