What you need to know about Kastro Thassos
Kastro got its name from the remains of a castle that used to be here. The castle was built by a Genoese family called the Gattilusie. You can still see some inscriptions on the walls of the Church of Saint Athanassios, which was constructed using rocks from the ancient wall.
After the residents moved to Limenaria for work, the castle was abandoned. Now, there are less than 5 people living here permanently. However, in recent years, some of the old houses have been restored by their owners for their own winter or summer getaways.
