Are you excited about your vacation but unsure what to see in 5 days in Thassos? Although you won’t be able to see all the island has to offer, if you plan your days wisely, you can get the most out of your holidays. To that goal, here is a 5-day Thassos itinerary that will leave you amazed by the island’s beauty.
Day 1: Arrive in Thassos and Explore Limenaria
After arriving in Thassos, the first thing you’ll want to do is rent a car. Having your own transportation will allow you to explore efficiently and make the most of your 5 days in Thassos.
You can rent a car from Thassos port or directly from the airport. Either way, make sure to book in advance to ensure availability and a good model,
Once you’re behind the wheel, head to the picturesque town of Limenaria.
If you haven’t booked your stay yet, I’d highly recommend Thalassies Hotel if you want a hotel or La Pierre if you prefer apartment accommodation.
Once you arrive in Limenaria, settle in at your hotel and prepare to explore the picturesque village. Take a leisurely walk along the promenade and soak in the beautiful sea views; these are only some of the many things you can do in Limenaria.
If you still have sunlight, it is worth walking to the nearby hidden cove of Limenaria to explore and swim with no one around.
After working up an appetite, make your way to the lively market in Limenaria. Here, you’ll find an array of fresh produce, local delicacies, and charming souvenirs. Indulge in some Greek cuisine at one of the many restaurants in town. From moussaka to souvlaki, you’ll be dining like a Greek god in no time!
Day 2: Beach Hop on the Southern Coast
On your second day in Thassos, it’s time to hit the beach! Start your day at Salonikios Beach, a serene and sandy paradise. Spend the morning sunbathing, swimming, or simply relaxing with a good book.
Afterward, head to Alikes Beach, known for its crystal-clear waters and stunning views. If you’re feeling adventurous, try snorkeling and discover the underwater world.
There are beachfront tavernas and cafes where you can have a traditional Greek breakfast or enjoy a leisurely coffee with a view of the sea.
Since you’re in the area, make sure to pass by the archaeological site of Aliki, which is only a 3-minute walk away. Spend time exploring the ancient marble quarry, which dates back to antiquity. The quarry is famous for the massive marble blocks that were extracted and transported to different parts of the island and beyond.
While at the archaeological site, you can also explore the ruins of early Christian basilicas, admire an ancient temple, and visit the Mycenaean tombs, which are carved into the rock and provide insight into the surprising Thassos history.
Next, make your way to Paradise Beach, a true gem. With its soft white sand and turquoise waters, this beach lives up to its name. Take a dip in the refreshing sea and bask in the sun.
Feel free to choose your spot on the sandy shore, whether you prefer to relax on your own towel or rent sun loungers from the beach bars.
Before the day ends and on the way back, don’t forget to visit the Archangel Michael Monastery, known for its breathtaking views. The visit will give you a fascinating glimpse into the everyday lives of Greek nuns.
At night, spend some time in the cosmopolitan village of Potos, only 6 minutes from Limenaria.
Day 3: Explore the Mountain Village of Kastro
For a change of scenery, venture into the mountain village of Kastro on your third day in Thassos. As you wander through the narrow streets, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time.
Above all, you’ll admire the traditional stone-built houses, narrow alleyways, and well-preserved architecture. Don’t forget to look for signs of the village’s long history.
Then, visit the Church of Agios Athanasios, a well-preserved medieval church with beautiful frescoes and religious art. You’ll find the church at the edge of the village, where you can climb to the top of the hill for panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the sea.
Then, enjoy a traditional Greek lunch at one of the charming tavernas in Kastro. Savor local dishes and Mediterranean cuisine while taking in the quaint atmosphere.
After lunch, you have two options for exploring the Thassos mountains. If you’re up for a challenge, drive to the Apostolus waterfall and embark on a hike to discover its beauty.
Alternatively, for a more unique experience, rent an e-bike and explore Thassos mountains on two wheels. You can even have the e-bikes delivered at Kastro or Limenaria for your convenience.
You can also join an e-bike tour from either Kastro or Limenaria, where a guide will lead you on an unforgettable adventure. That way, you don’t have to worry about all the sightseeing and driving since the guide will take care of everything.
Here’s a video from an ebike tour so you can get an idea:
Day 4: Giola, Gourna Waterfall, and Theologos Village
On day four, prepare to be amazed by the natural pools of Thassos. Start your day by visiting the famous lagoon of Giola. This natural pool is nestled amidst rocky cliffs and offers a truly unique swimming experience.
The journey to Giola is an adventure in itself, as it involves a hike along a rocky path, providing opportunities for stunning panoramic views of the coastline. The destination has become popular for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and those who appreciate the beauty of unspoiled landscapes
Set against the backdrop of the deep blue Aegean Sea and surrounded by rocky cliffs, Giola is a tranquil and picturesque spot offering a one-of-a-kind swimming experience. You’ll love a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear, emerald-green waters of the pool while taking in the dramatic coastal landscape.
Afterward, head to Theologos village, where you can swim in the freezing yet marvelous waters of the Gourna waterfalls. This hidden gem is a true paradise for nature lovers. You’ll find two ponds where you can take a dip and swim in almost freezing waters.
Above all, Gourna Waterfall’s remote location ensures that it remains a relatively unspoiled and tranquil destination, perfect if you want to relax with activities such as picnicking or bird watching. The enchanting scenery and the soothing sound of the falling water create a serene ambiance second to none on the island.
Once you’ve worked up an appetite, indulge in a delicious lunch in Theologos and try the local goat meat, a specialty of the area. If you’re feeling adventurous, consider hiking in the beautiful surroundings or rent an e-bike for a more thrilling exploration. Alternatively, drive to the scenic village of Skala Maries for a mesmerizing sunset experience.
In Skala Maries, you and your kids can also have fun at the island’s unique aquapark.
Day 5: Fishing Boat Trip and Last-Minute Shopping for your 5 days in Thassos
On your final day in Thassos, hop on a fishing boat trip from Limenaria and discover the beauty of the island’s coastline. Not only will you have the opportunity to admire the stunning scenery, but you can also try fishing and catch your very own fish for lunch.
During the boat trip, you’ll visit an array of hidden beaches, including Kefala, a stunning pebble-covered beach with breathtaking cliffs as a backdrop. These secret spots are definitely worth exploring.
You’ll also have the chance to swim under the cave of Tripiti. Imagine swimming through an opening in dense rocks leading you to a tiny, organized sandy beach where you can grab a drink and relax.
For lunch, the boat will take you to the Amalfi-like village of Skala Maries. Located on the southwestern coast of Thassos, this traditional village offers you a more laid-back and authentic Greek experience compared to some of the more touristy spots on the island.
Known for its fresh seafood, Skala Maries is the ideal spot to savor a delicious meal at the local seaside tavernas. There is nothing like enjoying your seafood surrounded by stunning natural beauty, with lush green hillsides, olive groves, and the azure waters of the Aegean Sea.
