Limenas vs Limenaria vs Skala Kallirachi: Decide Where You Want to Stay

Before embarking on your Thassos adventure, it’s crucial to decide where you want to stay. Each town has its own unique charm and attractions.

Limenas, also known as Thassos Town, is the main port and offers a vibrant atmosphere with its lively market and promenade.

Limenaria, on the other hand, is a charming seaside village with a relaxed vibe and many things to do

Skala Kallirachi is a small fishing village known for its picturesque landscapes and tranquil beaches.

Whether you prefer the hustle and bustle of a town or the serenity of a village, Thassos has something for everyone.

As you can imagine, 4 days in Thassos is enough to taste the island’s beauty but not enough to see it all. Therefore, I have compelled three different itineraries for 4 days in Thassos, based on where you stay.

In other words, here follows a 4-day Thassos itinerary if you stay in Limenaria, another Thasos itinerary for 4 days if you’re based in Limenas, and one more itinerary for 4 days in Thassos if you find accommodation in Skala Kallirachi.

Limenaria Day 1: Arrive in Thassos, Rent a Car, and Head to Limenaria

After arriving at the island from Keramoti or Kavala, rent a car and head straight to Limenaria. This charming seaside village is an ideal place to start your Thassos adventure. Take a leisurely walk along the promenade and soak in the beautiful sea views.

Explore the lively market and indulge in some retail therapy. If you still have sunlight, it is worth walking to the nearby hidden cove of Limenaria to explore and swim with no one around.

Limenaria Day 3: Explore the Mountain Village of Kastro

On your third day in Thassos, take a break from the beach and head to the mountain village of Kastro. Immerse yourself in the authentic Greek village life as you wander its narrow streets and admire the traditional stone houses.

Enjoy a delicious lunch in one of the village tavernas, where you can savor local delicacies.

Afterward, drive to Apostolus Waterfalls or, for a more adventurous experience, rent an e-bike and explore the Thassos mountains on two wheels. You can have the e-bike delivered to Kastro. You can even join an e-bike tour from Kastro or Limenaria to discover the hidden attractions of the area.

Limenaria Day 4: Visit Giola and Theologos Village

On your last day in Thassos, make sure to visit the famous natural lagoon of Giola. This unique swimming spot is a must-see, with its crystal-clear turquoise waters and stunning cliffside location.

Afterward, head to Theologos village and cool off in the freezing yet marvelous waters of Gourna Waterfall. This destination becomes increasingly popular every year as more recurrent visitors discover it for the first time.

Kefalogourna Theologos

After all the swimming, indulge in a delicious lunch at one of the local tavernas of Theologos, where you can try the famous local goat meat.

If you’re up for some more exploration, hike in the area of Theologos or rent an e-bike to discover the scenic village of Skala Maries and witness a breathtaking sunset. In Skala Maries, you and your kids can also have fun at the island’s unique aquapark.

Bonus tip: Where to stay in Limenaria

There are various options for places to stay in Limenaria, ranging from hotels and resorts to apartments and vacation rentals. Here are some options:

  1. Hotels and Resorts:
    • Blue Dream Palace: This luxury resort has modern amenities and a beautiful beachfront location.
  2. Apartments and Studios:
    • La Pierre: Self-catering apartments with a lovely garden close to the beach.
    • Azzurro Deluxe: Cozy and affordable studio apartments with kitchenettes.
  3. Vacation Rentals:
    • You can find a variety of vacation rentals on platforms like Booking.com, ranging from apartments and studios to entire houses or villas. A favorite pick is Votsalo Cozy Apartments.
  4. Local Guesthouses: Some locals in Limenaria offer guesthouse accommodations, which can provide a more personalized and authentic experience. However, if you want the best guesthouse service, I’d recommend heading to Theologos and Elaion Terra Boutique.

Before you finalize your booking, check reviews and ratings to ensure the place meets your expectations and needs. Additionally, consider the location, as proximity to the beach, restaurants, and other attractions can vary from one place to another. Remember that prices and availability may vary depending on the season, so booking well in advance is good, especially during peak tourist periods.

4 days in Thassos Itinerary based in Limenas

Limenas Day 1: Explore the Main Town, Limenas

If you’ve decided to stay in Limenas, your first day is all about exploring the main town. Take a leisurely walk along the promenade and enjoy the stunning views of the sea.

Discover the lively market, where you can find everything from fresh produce to handmade souvenirs. Immerse yourself in the rich history of Thassos by visiting the archaeological sites and museums.

And when it’s time to eat, indulge in the delicious Greek cuisine served in the local tavernas.

Limenas Day 2: Beach Hop on the East Coast

On your second day in Limenas, it’s time to explore the beautiful beaches of the east coast. Start with Makryammos Beach, known for its turquoise waters and lush surroundings.

Then, make sure to visit Marble Beach, where you can sunbathe on the white marble rocks and take a dip in the refreshing waters.

Finally, end your journey and relax on Golden Beach, a long stretch of golden sand and crystal-clear waters.

You can visit all the beaches by car, but you’d spend a lot of time in the car since you have to backtrack from Marble. To avoid that and follow the dirt path along the coastline, rent an e-bike and hop from one beach to another, enjoying the sun, the sea, and the stunning scenery.

You can have the e-bike delivered to your accommodation in Limenas the night before so you can start your adventure and exploration at your own pace and comfort.

Limenas Day 3: Go for a Full Thassos Tour

For your third day in Limenas, rent a car and embark on a full Thassos tour. Drive around the island and visit the must-see attractions, such as Paradise Beach, Aliki Beach, and the archaeological site of Giola.

Stop at Archangel Michael Monastery to enjoy the serene atmosphere and admire the panoramic views. Dine at Skala Maries, a picturesque village known for its delicious seafood, and have a coffee in Skala Kallirachi at Black Aroma, a charming café with a cozy atmosphere.

Limenas Day 4: Explore Thassos Mountains and Relax at La Skala Beach

On your last day in Limenas, join an e-bike tour to explore the Thassos mountains and the mountain villages of Panagia and Potamia.

Bonus tip: where to stay in Limenas during your Thassos Day trips adventures

A Thassos day trip is never complete without beautiful accommodation for you to shower and relax at the end of your day. Toward that goal, here are some suggestions on where to stay in Limenas Thassos:

  1. Hotels: There are several hotels in Limenas, ranging from budget to luxury. Some popular options include Hotel Pegasus, A for Art Design Hotel, and Hotel Angelica. These offer comfortable rooms and amenities with restaurants on-site.
  2. Apartments and Studios: You can also find apartments and studios for rent in Limenas, which are great if you prefer more space and a kitchen for self-catering. I’d recommend Studios Drakontis or Anastasia Studios.
  3. Villas and Vacation Rentals: If you’re traveling with a group or looking for a more private and homely experience, consider renting a villa or vacation home outside Limenas. I’d recommend Harmony Deluxe Villas in Theologos or Villa Oresti in Panagia.
  4. Beachfront Accommodation: Many visitors prefer to stay near the beach, and there are several beachfront hotels and resorts in Limenas. This allows you to wake up to beautiful sea views. The Makryammos Bungalows is one such option.
  5. Budget Accommodation: If you’re traveling on a budget, you can find guesthouses and smaller hotels that offer more affordable rates. Examples include the Hotel Timoleon and Hotel Egeo.

It’s a good idea to book your accommodation well in advance, especially during the peak tourist season (summer), as Thassos can get crowded. The right choice depends on your preferences, budget, and the kind of experience you want to have during your stay in Limenas Thassos.

I am Dimi and this is a travel blog about Thassos Greece, my homeland. Although I grew up on this island for almost two decades, I decided to move and study abroad for six years. After Thassos, I lived in five different countries. During that time, I traveled to four continents and saw more places than I could count.

However, it was during the pandemic and my return to Thassos that I realized how lucky I am to call this island my home. And this blog is an effort to show you the beauty of Thassos. I hope you enjoy it :))
